An element consisting of space, and designed to contain a fire is called a fireplace. In other words, fireplace can be defined as a structure, normally made of stone or brick, for holding fire. Most fireplaces are built indoors for warming up homes. Sometimes, these are constructed outdoors for evening warmth or outdoor cooking. Outdoor fireplace is also called patio fireplace. In older times, coal, wood or peat was used as a burning material in fireplaces. Today, these are replaced by cleaner and safer materials, like natural gas and electric systems. The fireplace or fireside has usually been a central characteristic of the household, as it gives warmth to aid endurance through an extended winter.

The feeling of direct heat, and the gripping leaps and glimmers of a wood fire, make its use enjoyable in cold conditions even today. As a result, people gather around a fireplace for dialogue and family bonding. After the workday, it is often the place where a family meets at night, before going to sleep. One prominent use of this tradition in the United States during the Great Depression was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "fireside chats", In his weekly radio addresses, he uses the family gathering time to state his views on issues of national importance.

Fireplace mantels are the main part of custom interior decoration. A mantel usually offers an exclusive opportunity for the architects/designers to make a personal statement, exclusive to the room, they are creating. There are several types of fireplace used in allover the world, such as coal, wood, peal, gas and electric fireplaces. Some governmental agencies have placed a fractional ban on solid fuel burning fireplaces, based upon air pollution concerns. Gas fireplaces very often burn off a small amount of their fuel in a flickering show, meant to recall a wood fire. In current years, Ventless Gel Fireplaces have received quite a bit of consideration. A fireplace may consist of some or all of these essentials, firebox, base, mantel, chimney, iron bars, smoke chamber, damper and some more.

There are varieties of accessories used with fireplaces, for the interior firepit, grates, log boxes, andirons and firedogs, all of which are used to crib the fuel and accelerate burning. There are fireplace tools including poker, bellows, tongs, shovel, brush and tool stand, used for external decoration and tending function of the fireplace. Perhaps, fire-back is the most significant part of the fireplace. A good fire-back not only protects the wall at the back of the fire, but also increases the effectiveness of the fire with up to 50%. Modern versions of all stated accessories are available, but there are extant accessories manufactured in Europe, which date at least as early as 1550 AD.
